40Plus Customer Presentation 8/8/90
Slide 1: 40Plus Hardware Investment Protection
In the HP tradition of offering competitive products that provide
lasting value for our customers, HP announces the 40Plus Upgrade
Program. This program gives you, our customer, the assurance that when
you buy our products today, you will have a growth path to performance
in excess of 40 MIPS. HP recognizes the significant investment that
you make in your computer systems. We design our products and programs
so that this investment is protected over an extended period of time.
Many other vendors are neither capable nor willing to provide this
level of customer commitment.
The 40Plus program applies to our new Series 400 products and is
available to both HP-UX and Domain/OS customers. It offers a choice of
two upgrade paths. For the user who wants 100% object-code
compatibility with their existing HP-UX and Domain/OS-based systems, a
board upgrade will be provided to a subsequent Motorola-based product
which will provide greater than 40 MIPS performance. For those
customers with compute-intensive applications with high-end 3D
graphics, a base system trade-in credit to future PA-RISC workstations
will be provided.
Points:
1. Excellent performance today, guarantee of upgrade to even better
performance.
2. Motorola upgrade is 100% object-code compatible for both HP-UX and
Domain/OS customers.
3. The Motorola upgrades are board swaps, the customer keeps the same
package, peripherals, and applications.
Notes to the presenter:
1. Due to licensing agreements with Hitachi and Motorola, HP is not
affected by the litigation concerning shipment of the 68030.
2. The PA-RISC upgrade will be available specifically for customers
who have purchased PersonalVRX and TurboVRX systems.
3. The PA-RISC systems will usher in HP's first offering of the OSF
operating system with DCE. Domain/OS customers will port to this
"Domain-like" operating environment when they move to their
PA-RISC systems. The HP-UX operating system will also be
supported on the new PA-RISC workstations.
4. While the Motorola upgrades will require an O/S update,
applications will not be affected. Applications will be 100%
binary compatible; however, for optimum performance from a 40Plus
investment, a recompile may be necessary.
Slide 2: 40Plus Upgrade Program
The 40Plus program is designed to protect your investment by providing
a clear path to higher performance at very attractive prices. The
Motorola upgrade option in 40Plus offers you more than 40 MIPS of
performance through a future Motorola 68000-based processor, with 100%
object-code compatibility with Domain/OS and HP-UX, all for a price of
under $5000.
Customers with 3D-graphics have another option as well! Three-
dimensional applications are often compute-intensive and could benefit
from the high-end performance of HP's PA-RISC workstations. Customers
may receive a trade-in credit of 35% on the base system U.S. List price
of their older system when upgrading to PA-RISC. This translates to a
credit of between 35-57% of the Series 400 original base system net
price!
Points:
1. These upgrade promotional prices are only available to customers
who purchase their Series 400 systems by Dec. 31, 1990.
Motorola Upgrade:
1. Object-code compatible for both HP-UX and Domain/OS
2. Just a board swap for most configurations
3. This upgrade option is supported on all Model 400t, Model 400s,
Model 425t, and Model 433s systems.
4. 40+ MIPS for less than $5000
PA-RISC Upgrade:
1. High levels of application source-code portability
2. Eligible systems: Series 400 systems with PersonalVRX or TurboVRX
3. HP guarantees a trade-in credit of 35% of the original list price
of customer's Series 400 toward a new PA-RISC workstation (this
translates to between 35-57% of the net price, depending on the
purchase agreement).
Notes to the Presenter:
1. The availability on the actual Motorola upgrade board will be
announced at a later date.
2. Operating systems supported on PA-RISC are HP-UX and HP's OSF.
Domain customers will have the functionality of Domain, but in an
open systems environment, by moving to HP's OSF and DCE offering.
3. The Model 400dl is not supported for these upgrade options.
Slide 3: 40Plus PA-RISC Upgrade Details
Hewlett-Packard's 40Plus PA-RISC system upgrade path offers PersonalVRX
and TurboVRX owners greatly increased performance while allowing them
to leverage their graphics investment. The same 3D graphics subsystems
that are used on the Series 400 will be supported with the PA-RISC
systems. Hewlett-Packard protects your investment.
Moreover, not only do you get a substantial jump in performance and the
ability to leverage your graphics investment, but -- when you purchase
your PA-RISC workstation by June 30, 1991 -- you get these benefits
with a trade-in credit that can be up to 57% of your original Series
400 net purchase price (depending on your purchase agreement)!
The new PA-RISC workstations will be available early in 1991.
Points:
1. Box swap -- Customer retains graphics, EISA I/O, and
non-integrated peripherals.
2. The HP-RISC workstation must be purchased by June 30, 1991 to
receive the trade-in credit of 35% of the original List (35-57% of
Net). The credit will be given upon return of the Series 400 base
system. The original Series 400 must be purchased by Dec. 31,
1990 in order to be eligible for the RISC upgrade credit.
3. New PA-RISC workstations available early calendar year '91.
Notes to the Presenter:
1. To help with I/O and peripheral configuration decisions,
preliminary reviews of supported functionality will be made
available this fall. A PA-RISC configuration guide will be
available at the time of the introduction.
2. Does not include any mono or color VRX systems, Series 300, or DN
family.
Slide 4: 40Plus Motorola Upgrade Details
A simple, cost-effective board upgrade offers owners of Series 400t/s
models performance beyond 40 MIPS, in a 100% object-code compatible
system. Object-code compatibility means that the switch to the new
systems is almost painless -- applications will run without any
recompilation (note: for optimum performance from the 40Plus
investment, a recompile may be necessary).
Series 400 systems purchased by December 31, 1990 are eligible for a
board upgrade price guaranteed to be less than $5000 (U.S. list --
discountable), with return of old CPU board.
Points:
1. The object-code compatibility is for both HP-UX and Domain/OS.
2. The upgrade price of $5000 is discountable.
3. Includes all Series 400 "s" and "t" systems (i.e. Models 400t,
400s, 425t, and 433s).
Notes to the Presenter:
1. 400dl will have limited upgradability and is therefore not a part
of the 40Plus program. The upgrade to the 68040 will still
provide performance of >20 MIPS. The 40Plus upgrade program does
not include the 400dl systems, Series 300, or DN family.
2. An O/S update will be required for HP-UX, and will likely be
required for Domain/OS as well.
3. Series 400's purchased after Dec. 31, 1990 can still be upgraded,
but the <$5000 promotional price is not guaranteed.
4. Box swap options from the 20+ MIPS MC68040-based HP 9000 Series
300 and Domain/OS-based Series 5500 to the Series 400 are under
consideration for the future.
